Bloggers Unite: The Keithan Deshawn Interview

So I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to my blog brother Keithan Deshawn of we had a lot to talk about and discuss. Check out his interview.

Who is Keithan?
I'm just a dude working towards my dreams.

When did you start your site?
Initially I started blogging in 2008. My first blog was a personal blog which I only updated a few times. I got distracted and stopped blogging for over a year. Late 2009, I started blogging again. This blog was similar to the blog that I have now. It was called “Kick It with Keithan” [laughs]. I didn’t know what the heck to call it. Now that I think about it, it’s funny to me. I enjoyed blogging though so I decided to brand myself. February 14 2010, I launched and I haven’t stopped since.

What was your main vision behind creating the site?
I wanted to create a platform where I could express my thoughts about different songs and artists without all the extra gossip. I’ve noticed there’s a quite a bit of bloggers who love celebrity gossip. I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not for me.

What was growing up like for you?
Growing up was a unique experience. I was very active. I loved playing sports like basketball, soccer, baseball (even tho I sucked! lol) and football. A lot of people don't know that I'm the eldest of eight children. So I had a lot of responsibility which helped me mature at a young age.

Back to your site, who if anyone inspired you to do a site?
I like to pay homage to the blogs that started way before mine such as Concrete Loop and Crunk n Disorderly. They've been around for a few years and they opened the door to entertainment blogging. Necole Bitchie ( is probably one of my biggest inspirations. I’ve been following her blog for a couple years and I’ve seen her blog grow. I respect her brand that she has built thus far. Life in general inspired me to blog. I quickly found that blogging is sometimes a stress reliever for me. When I'm in blogging mode, nothing is on my mind but what ever it is that I'm writing about.

What is a long term goal for you and your site?
I want to develop and expand my brand. I'm working on a few things at the moment so be on the look out.

You are a student at Towson University, What are you taking up?
Yes, I am. I’m a Mass Communications major with a concentration in Strategic Public Relations & Integrated Communications. I graduate next year whoo-hoo! [laughs]

What made you choose to take up that major?
It didn’t require much math [laughs]. Throughout high school, I researched different careers and majors. I didn’t know about public relations at the time but when I ran into it online, I continued reading about what publicists do. I ran with that and haven't looked back since. I love PR! Within the next few years, you will see my PR brand grow.

What do you want legacy to be?
Well some people tend to think all bloggers act alike which isn't the case. It's unfortunate that there's a bad stereotype for entertainment bloggers. I don't want my blog to live up to that stereotype; I just want my blog to be known for it's quality and accurate content. Hopefully one day, people can refer to my blog as a "credible source".

What has been some of your most memorable moments in the entertainment industry?
I would say just networking and working with different professionals in the industry.

What would you say to someone who is getting ready to do our type of work?
First, do your research! I think research is the most important thing to do when trying to venture into anything! I still continue to do my research in order to make me a better blogger. Second, have some sort of plan written out. Lastly, have fun with it. It’s your blog, be creative...SHAT!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself working in PR, possibly have my own firm. I also see myself blogging.

Do you have any last words for you viewers as well as mines?
Thank you for inviting me here. I really appreciate everyone whose been supporting me from the start. I say this all the time and I will say it again “I support those who support me”. [laughs]. Make sure you guys follow me on Twitter @KDeshawn.
