Stand In Your light: The Lonnell Williams Interview
Who is Lonnell Williams?
Thank you to The Scoop Ent. for this interview opportunity. Lonnell is a very low key brotha who enjoys actively living life. I try to see the best in most things and I work hard to maintain peace and joy in my life.
When did you start 3LW TV?
3LWTV launched in January 2009 with a very in depth interview with Ms. Vagina Power, Alexyss K Tylor. Though i'd posted videos on YouTube previously, it was this interview that launched 3LWTV as a show. The ride has been intense ever since.
What was growing up like for you?
Growing up was awesome! From a very early age I was blessed with very diverse experiences. My family had it all, black, white, rich, poor, fat skinny, drug addicts, alcoholics, entrepreneurs, jail birds, elitists. You name it. I was exposed to a lot growing up, though oddly enough at the time I felt I was the only gay person in the world. Can you imagine?
What is your coming out story?
Coming out for me was no joy. I hid it. Lived a lie, the whole 9. The turning point was when I first fell in love with a guy. I reached a point of frustration that I was so happy in this relationship but I couldn't share it with the other people i loved. I was so afraid. Finally, when I was ready to clean house and get rid of several people in my family, I used my coming out as a way to dismiss them. I wanted a fight and I was ready to cuss all those black muthafuckas OUT! That totally backfired. Though most weren't elated, they were overwhelmingly supportive. I was not expecting that at all. I was actually kind of pissed off that I didn't get to cuss them out. lol That was the moment when I learned that living in truth is the most liberating thing one can do!
Do you feel as though people's views and opinions changed towards you once you came out?
What other people think of me is none of my business. I will say that if there were any changes, they were far more supportive than I expected. I live my life by example and I think the people around me see that and that is what maintains their respect.
What was your vision behind 3LW TV?
3LWTV continues to be an amazing ride. There is so much work that goes in to it, but I love every minute of it! The entire show was just an organic process. I never set out with the intention of becoming popular or even hosting a show. The only reason I started a blog in the first place was to share my travel pics as many friends were requesting them. After meeting B. Scott in LA and doing a short impromptu interview, I liked the process but i knew it had to have more of a purpose than me sitting in front of the camera reading folk left and right. My good friend Jordan from Holland was having dinner with me in NYC one night and said, "you can really do something with this." It wasn't even on my radar like that but Jordan made it very clear. I brushed up on my editing skills and set out to fill a void in the community....and that void was connecting people.
3LWTV was born from my blog, "Livin' and Luvin' Life" - 3L's. LW are my initials. 3LW was not available because it is owned by Zomba records who have rights to the singing group 3LW's music. So, I added TV and there you have 3LWTV.
You have interviewed so many people who has been your favorite person to interview?
Wow, thats impossible to answer, I've had many favorites! It might be easier to say who I couldn't stand to interview. LOL Just kidding. You know I can't go out like that. I will say Alexyss is always a favorite because you just know its going to be impossible to keep a straight face talking to that woman. I recently completed a new "Pillow Talk" with Ryan Drake of ADTV and Bishop_M and I can't wait for you guys to see it. THAT was soooooo much fun!
What inspired you to start pillow talk?
My good friend Demann and I were chatting one night as his house in LA. Demann also performs the 3LWTV theme song. We were bouncing around ideas to take 3LWTV into a new realm. Of that discussion, the idea for "Pillow Talk" was born. The title was his idea and we both ran with it. I had no idea it'd be as popular as it has become! What an honor! What a great way to get the sexiest men in bed! YESSSSSSSSSS! I love my life! LOL
You have traveled all around the country with your show, what is your favorite city to visit?
My favorite city in the US would be New York, hands down. I'm always the most productive and alive in that city! I do a lot of international travel as well and have many favorites overseas including Dubai, Paris, and Hong Kong!
I saw your interview with YouTuber Blueyedsimba, Was that interview as an interviewer as emotional for you as it was for he and the viewers?
The interview with Simba was a huge turning point for me. What I realized is that he trusted me enough to really be candid. It was emotional and it took me by surprise, in a good way. Simba's revelations helped me to see there is a lot of healing that is needed in our community. So many of us carry so much pain. We have to discuss it, grow and heal. Period.
What was your experience like at this years Miami Sizzle?
Sizzle was AMAZING! I met so many supporters of 3LWTV and they showed so much love. It was humbling and overwhelming at times. I was so honored that so many people support the show. I loved meeting everyone! The events at Sizzle were top notch as usual. Dwight Powell and his team don't play when it comes to giving you the "wow" factor! My promotional partnership with Sizzle continues to blow my mind! Is it Memorial Day again yet? I'm so ready to get back to Miami for Sizzle 2012!
Whom are some people that you look forward to interviewing?
I do have a wish list of people I'd like to interview. I won't give specifics at this time but if I've learned anything, the sky is the limit! I just want to continue to provide positive images of our community.
Are their any words of advice you would like to give to those whom are pursuing this type of career full time?
If you are interested in doing a blog or a show you need to be very honest with yourself and your intentions. Why do you want to do this? Do you want to be 'famous'? Do you want to make money? Is it your passion? Most people have no idea how much work goes into maintaining a show. You absolutely have to be passionate about it! My advice would be to be yourself, find your own voice and stick with it, no matter what. Don't try to be The Skorpion Show....Kevin and Makael have that on lock. Don't try to be AfricanBoi or Qaadir, because you can't! Be yourself!! Be persistent and have a positive purpose!
Do you have any last words for your fans and my viewers?
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am honored by your support and will continue working to bring you the best. 3LWTV is about YOU! Your audacity to live authentically and share with our audience is healing lives all around the world. I know this to be true, I have the emails to prove it! Let's continue this awesome journey! Always, stand in your light
